By no means do I claim myself to be an expert in the area though have through the course of promoting my website http://www.themafiawrz.eu have had reason to delve somewhat with n the ranks and hope to explain a little more in regards to what is believed to be the big four in ranking terms and the current hows, what, do's and dont's...
What are google , mozrank, compete and alexa rankings and what do they mean?
Ok to put it simply these are tools search engines use to rank your page/website. There importance and relevance varies from post to post and one thing for sure is that there weighting is dependent entirely on the search engine using it. For instance if i was to rank high for a keyword in yahoo though not google the reason could be either google hasn't indexed all the pages yahoo has OR yahoo uses different elements of those/these tools to determine how they rank their pages.
Google pr as its name describes was designed by the google team, it allocates a page rank "pr" to your site from na, 0-10. The higher the ranking the more authority attributed your site.
Page Rank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. It also takes into account things like anchor text , titles and relevance of sites sharing links
Mozrank shows how popular a page or website is on the web. The more links to a page, the more popular it becomes. Links from important pages increase your popularity and your mozRank as it does with google. Domains linked to the website , the number of backlinks, authority or popularity, trust, spam, freshness and relativity of data and content all impact on your overall rank
The Compete Rank is based on Unique Visitors and does not consider page views or number of visits made to the site. Rank is often used as a compliment to Unique Visitors to provide a relative metric that shows the significance of a site. As with alexa rank should be used as an estimate only.
Alexa rank is determined by unique hits to your site, it is attributed through the use of toolbars and the like. Visitors logging in whilst using these tool bars , such as search status plugin for firefox or alexa tool bars allow alexa to gather information on these sites. They rank on frequency and number of unique hits. There are definite flaws in ranking when relying on alexa as it is reliant on users having such tools installed. Sites ranking high usually have a high number of industry , it and web masters visiting it as these peoples are the most likley to have such tools installed. Though it is unreliable and basing your strategies long term on alexa rank is ill advised , it is still used by many marketing and search engine companies as a valid and highly used ranking tool.
And backlinks, deep links, reciprical and link partners?
All the rage a few years ago was to have links plastered anywhere and everywhere resulting in sites that where termed link farming. A link farm is a site with nothing but cluster of jumbled links to random pages cross the net. at this time your ranking increased depending on the total number of links the search engines bots found. Ths is not true of todys standards and link strategies have since evolved. It is important to remember though what is now acceptable may not always be the case as se are always optimizing and revising there algorithms and how they rate sites. It is far better to steer away from means that may in future have you blacklisted.
Back links by very nature are links on other sites that point back to your site. These accumulate and based on varying factors increase your page rank.
Deep links re back links to your site though pertain to other pages deep within. Doing this directs search engines to index deeper into your site and helps spread authority.
Link partners are other sites that youve agreed to exchange links with. they should usually be sites that have or share relevance with each other as this increases he links worth and helps to increase your overall rank.
Reciprocal links are similar to link partners though the relevance is not usually the case. You may come across reciprocal links when submitting your site to such places as link diretories ie ; http://submitit.info/directory/
Taking all these things into account and basing your strategy on a long term plan should insure success in future website endeavours

How to stay a step ahead always seems to be the problem in todays ever flooding marketplace.
You should establish a strong brand name , and this can be easily done with little or no expense though your goal should always be to leave a strong impression and mark on the game world. Be clear about what you want and set attainable goals. Expect the best if you intend on firstly competing and finally being the best.
Its important to keep your content fresh and relevent , introduce new concepts along the way and leave the old models behind . With a constant and ever changing style of game play you can keep your players excited and interested. Activly encourage input from your client as a diverse online game - RPG - MMORPG - MOG world has just as many diverse occupants . Youd be supprised of the gems that can offten be found and more imprtantly it didnt have to pay a cent. Take feedback very seriously and the result is a game that gamers have themselves helped to create.
Dont get me wrong , its not all easy like, just jump on into the gravy train. Dedication, time, and patience. If you have problems and your good enough you will find you will always have players / clients by your side urging and supporting you on. In the year and 3/4s we have been online weve had a myriad of problems ranging from a host going out of business, to a registrar closing and umpteen more things i could mention. The important thing is always just to stick it in there
Work hard and it will payoff.
Like we did ,alot of gamers become disgruntled because of sites with well established and or internal monopolies. Often times I often find my self having to be the deciding matter in things id prefer not to have to interfere in.
This I believe is the domain of most all web masters and administrators of any social site. We run a free online rpg www.TheMafiaWarz.eu and as the name suggests is based on the day to day life of the Mafia. The interaction between players is live and the object to help your family win. We have live chat rooms , a number of public msg boards, forums and player profile's.
Obviously at times with so many mediums of communication and the object being to take out your opponent, things can tend to get a lil heated and sometimes personal opinions tend spill over and like a virus , infects the service.
Things that often come in to debate tend to be more the common mistakes, ie; religion race and politics. Surprisingly still in todays day and age people still feel the right to shove their opinions down each others mouths..
I very much like open debates and hate to feel that i as the all seeing moderator (whatever qualifies me for that?) should have to step in and intercede and stifle peoples thoughts. Unfortunately the play ground antics of school that we thought so far behind us , still beckon, knocking on our cyber doors.
In politics i believe open forum is good , as people often times dont see or wont listen , these mediums allow for multiple opinions on this matter and generally encourage a healthy debate... If your familiar with politicians in Indonesia , lol often times though it can easily lead to outright chaos so is a very delicate balance.
So you can allow discussion but at what risk and are you prepared to face the consequences when it turn out just that lil bit nasty.
Other hot topics and ones I don't believe belong in any way anywhere on boards and networks where the direct opinions are not reflected by all and most certainly not on my site.. Race and Religion. I very much personally enjoy the discussion into religion and there varieties though as with race i find there are people out there who should not be involved in such discussions through ignorance or hate and therefore discourage it entirely.
Finally on this matter and im sure there are a lot more to hand which i will have to get back to you later about is the issue of mothers... Your mommas so fat she has her own post code, lol now as understandably stupid and childish as that is and certainly in most often cases a joke. You would be surprised how many people are offended by them. Why? well unfortunately some of us haven't parents around any more and is amazing how something so little such as a joke can hurt so deeply.
May we all step carefully and avoid treading in toes in these social minefields that today are our playgrounds

Enduring hard times is not the only thing that sees a site succeed , often times it is also a good measure of patience common sense and a little bit of though. It goes with out saying then that abusing your clients is not a good thing, no matter how warranted it may be. It amazes me how many times i get messaged in theme from players , with there thug attitudes and on-line Hangups. Now granted its a device of my own creating and i shouldn't expect much from a Mafia jacked up group vying for domination and not everyone is like that. Though it is important to observe the rule of business where at the end of the day the customer is always right... i like to add a twist to that, almost... :)
Customer relations is very important and your interactions with your visitors are very important. I grew up in the restaurant industry for insistence and is a common saying if you have a happy customer your lucky theyll walk away and tell three people if you have an unhappy one , they'll tell ten.
It is important to be polite and prompt with your replies and always follow them up. People hate to be left hanging and more importantly if there a new client, you probably wont get the chance again to make it up to them.
Last but not least always reread your msgs ,i often find my self retyping them over and over again as is important to be clear and explain everything to the best of you ability and make the customer feel informed.
Other than that and a big dose of patience , you should be knocking down those support requests in no time:)
